Socially-responsible single-origin chocolate from Vietnam, crafted at the source.
Vincent Mourou and Samuel Maruta met by chance, deep
in the Vietnamese jungle. As corporate escapees, they both craved adventure and creativity - and with the world’s best cacao growing all around them, the answer seemed obvious: make chocolate.
So they did. Slowly at first, the old-fashioned way, taking three days to produce a single kilo. They bought individual bags of cacao direct from the source, paying a premium to support farmers and going beyond ‘fair trade’. This hands-on approach continues today.
Marou’s single-origin chocolate pioneered the ‘bean-to-bar’ movement in Asia, and is one of the few made-at-source chocolates in the world. It’s roasted low and slow, capturing the terroir of each province, much like a fine wine. And for dark chocolate lovers, this exciting, richly complex and gold- gilded range is utterly irresistible.
Marou Chocolate celebrates people and place, each bar telling a story of season, soil and Vietnamese spirit. Taste jungle and delta, drought and rain - the terroir of each province in the smoothest of dark chocolates.
✓ POD-TO-BAR - Not many chocolates can claim this level of care and transparency. Marou are on the ground visiting plantations and partnering with growers, hand-selecting cacao, testing each bag, and seeing it right through to their delicious finished product.
✓ SINGLE ORIGIN - Shoppers are familiar with single origin coffee, and single origin chocolate represents the same complex flavours, regional variations and quality. Marou use exclusively Vietnamese cacao, manufactured in Ho Chi Minh City, with each bar representing its province or estate of origin.
✓ FAIR TRADE + SUSTAINABLE - Marou cut-out the middleman by dealing directly with growers, helping them avoid market fluctuations and exploitation. By paying above-market rates, Marou support talented and ethical farmers who use sustainable practices to cultivate superior-quality cacao.
✓ AGROFORESTRY INVOLVEMENT - Marou are supporting environmentally-friendly alternatives to rubber plantations or developments with their Madagui Agroforestry Project. Cacao trees are planted on threatened land to encourage biodiversity and preserve precious parcels of Vietnam.
✓ INCREDIBLE AWARD-WINNING PACKAGING - Marou packaging stands out. Richly coloured with bright-golden lettering, it’s art, jungle and cacao royalty rolled into one.
